As Curaçao is not really a lush island we never had the tradition of wooden household items as you find on the other islands. In the past we used to wave baskets and later on Curaçao became famous for the panama hat. At a certain moment traders of especially Haiti and Jamaica started bringing in their local craft, so there was less necessity on the island to make our own crafts. Fortunately nowadays more and more we see a lot of authentic, local handcraft, especially made of recycled material. At Landhuis Habaai not only do we have a souvenir shop for local handcrafts but also we do feature a local handcraft market every second Saturday of the month. At the market local artisans bring a large diversity of handmade products and show their talent and skills.
